Antiques And Primitives American Folk Art Details

This work presents a private collection of American folk art sculpture. Weather vanes are the focus of this collection of mostly 19th-century pieces, but included are ship's figureheads, decoys, and a painting of a stalking tiger, reproduced in a four-page gatefold. All the sculpture has been specially photographed for this book, with many pieces shown in double page spreads and from multiple perspectives. An illustrated catalogue includes descriptive captions and provenance, and this is repeated and provided loose in a plastic sleeve attached to the binding, ready to be removed and referred to alongside the plates. An introduction sets the collection and specific works in the context of American folk art history.

An introduction and eight contributed essays augment some 300 detailed, comparative, and historical photographs that display Meyer's extensive collection of exquisite carved canes. The vivid color photos show a diversity of styles, techniques, and themes; the accompanying text treats methods of dat

In 1974 Joel and Kate Kopp were guest curators for the ground-breaking and very popular exhibition of hooked rugs held at the Museum of American Folk Art in New York. In that exhibition and in this book, first published in 1975, then expanded and reissued in 1985, the Kopps brought a new eye to the field and showed how the primitive imagery that appears in these rugs often parallels other categories of folk art. With over 230 illustrations, over half of them in color, the authors trace the development of the hooked rug, from its origins in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century yarn-sewn bed rugs to twentieth-century examples of hooked rugs.

A Pictoral History of Quilts in America

Influenced by developments in Europe, American proponents in the late 19th and early 20th centuries successfully promoted the "minor arts" as fine art hand-wrought by individual craftsmen, extolling the virtue of everyday objects and a return to honest, simple materials and workmanship. The designs are, perhaps, the closest embodiment there is of "American style". Included are furniture, ceramics, metalwork, glass, books, drawings and textiles by Gustav Stickley, Greene & Greene, Frank Lloyd Wright, Tiffany Studios and many others. This book looks at their work.

With the rising popularity of contemporary folk art, collectors have been asking, Who are the artists? Where are they located? Where can I see their art? How can I buy their work? And how much does it cost?
This wonderfully illustrated guidebook offers answers to these questions and much more. The authors, passionate collectors of contemporary American folk art for more than two decades, have traveled widely throughout rural and urban America, searching out artists, collecting extraordinary pictures, sculptures, and objects, and gathering information. Their highly informative text, organized by region, features 181 biographies of both new and established artists and includes tips about how to evaluate the art. The book is illustrated with color photos of more than 155 works as well as forty-four black-and-white pictures of the artists. Of special value are the extensive listings of galleries and museums where the best folk art being created today may be viewed.
Supplementing the text are essays by Lee Kogan of the Museum of American Folk Art and by Nancy Druckman of Sotheby's. Regional maps, a bibliography, and a price guide round out this indispensable reference book.

Insiders’ Guide to California's Wine Country is packed with information on the best attractions, restaurants, accommodations, shopping and events from the perspective of one who knows the area well.
